Bounce helps your wedge move through the turf instead of digging, giving you more forgiveness around the green. But the right amount of bounce is different for every golfer.
What Is Bounce?
Bounce is the angle between the leading edge and trailing edge of the wedge sole. That angle determines how the sole interacts with the turf and sand and helps keep the leading edge from digging too deeply into the ground.
As Bob Vokey famously says, “Bounce is your friend.” Bounce helps provide forgiveness by allowing the club to move through the turf rather than digging into it. When matched to your swing and playing conditions, the right bounce can help create cleaner contact and more consistent results.
Your Swing Determines Your Bounce
The amount of bounce you need depends largely on how you deliver the club.
Steeper swing: If you take deeper divots and tend to drive the club into the ground, more bounce — such as .12 or .14 — can help keep the wedge from digging.
Shallower swing: If you take smaller divots or sweep the ball, less bounce — such as .04, .06, or .08 — may give you the turf interaction you prefer.
Conditions matter, too. Softer turf typically favors more bounce, while firm conditions and tight lies often favor less because the sole needs to interact differently with the ground.
Find the Bounce That Fits You
There’s no one bounce that’s right for every golfer. Vokey wedges are designed with different bounce characteristics to help golfers find the sole that best matches their swing and playing conditions.
And because bounce and grind work together, choosing the right Vokey grind can further refine how the sole interacts with the turf.
