Wedge Loft: How to Fill Your Distance Gaps

Wedge Loft: How to Fill Your Distance Gaps

When it comes to building the right wedge setup, loft is where the conversation starts. The loft of each wedge plays a major role in how far you hit it, making it one of the most important factors in creating consistent distance gaps from your irons through your wedges.

What Is Wedge Loft?

Loft is the angle of the club face relative to the ground, measured in degrees. As loft increases, the club is designed to launch the ball higher and travel a shorter distance.

That’s why knowing the loft of your wedges—and the loft of the clubs leading into them—is critical to building a setup with consistent yardage gaps.

Build a Wedge Setup That Fits Your Distances

The goal of a properly gapped wedge setup is simple: give yourself a club for every shot you need to hit.

Bob Vokey recommends 4–6 degrees of loft between each wedge, which typically creates 10–15 yards of distance between clubs.

For example, if your pitching wedge is 46 degrees, your gap wedge could be 50 degrees, followed by a 54-degree sand wedge and a 58-degree lob wedge.

Your ideal setup will depend on how far you hit each club, so start with your pitching wedge and work down through your wedges to create consistent carry distances.

Find Your Right Loft

There is no one-size-fits-all wedge setup. The right loft progression is the one that gives you consistent distance gaps and the right clubs for the shots you need to hit.

Know your loft. Know your distances. Build your wedges around your game.
