Titleist Brand Ambassador Brian Harman trusted his Pro V1 golf ball and Vokey Design SM9 wedges to an historic six-shot victory in the 151st Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.
Harman’s short game was rock solid throughout week, particularly over the final 36 holes where he scrambled his way around Hoylake with his SM9 50.08F, 54.08M and 60.04L. When he missed the green, he got up-and-down 75 percent of the time (18 of 24), most often with his Vokey Design 60.04L lob wedge.
Around the green, Harman’s touch was on full display, gaining 1.44 shots on the field. “Brian is a sensitive short game player, picking up on the slightest changes in ground contact and sound” said Aaron Dill, Vokey Tour Rep
“His 60L is very special”, said Dill. “Brian is a ‘slapper’ of the sand and is brilliant at managing his trajectory using a flatter swing plane than some. Because of this flatter plane, he tends to use more of the heel in the sand and turf, which is the part of the sole we grind and polish on the most”.
As a feel player, Harman also prefers a lighter lob wedge in the bag. While the standard swing weight for most is D5, Harman’s lob wedge floats from C7-C8 based on feel, allowing him to create additional speed and spin. The L Grind is the lowest bounce option in the Vokey matrix. The heel, toe and trailing edge relief allow for maximum greenside versatility. This grind is perfect for firm conditions and designed for precise players who have complete control at impact, allowing for maximum shot-making versatility.
“The 60 needs to be super versatile, and it’s great out of the bunkers. I use it mostly out of the rough and any sort of chipping around the green,” Harman said.
